Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about digital security, privacy, and managing your online presence.

General

What is the Monzign Foundation?
The Monzign Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with digital literacy and security awareness. We provide free, comprehensive educational resources covering personal security, professional presence, family safety, and crisis management.
Is everything on this site really free?
Yes. All our educational resources, guides, tools, and templates are completely free to access. We're funded by community donations through our Buy Me a Coffee page. We don't run ads, sell data, or charge for content.
Who are these resources for?
Everyone who uses the internet. We have tailored pathways for individuals, families, professionals, seniors, students, and job seekers. Whether you're just starting to think about digital security or looking to optimize your professional presence, we have resources for you.
Where should I start?
We recommend starting with our Digital Audit to assess your current situation, then exploring the Learn section for foundational knowledge. From there, follow the pathways most relevant to your needs.
How often is the content updated?
Our content is designed to be evergreen — focused on principles and frameworks rather than specific tools or platforms that change frequently. We review all content periodically and note the "last reviewed" date on each page. If you notice something outdated, please let us know.

Security

What's the single most important thing I can do for my online security?
Use a password manager and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your most important accounts — especially email, banking, and social media. These two steps alone dramatically reduce your risk of being compromised. Visit our Password Security and MFA guides to learn more.
I think my account has been hacked. What do I do?
Don't panic. Go to our Compromised Account Recovery Guide for immediate step-by-step instructions. The most important first step is securing your email account, as it's typically the gateway to resetting all other accounts.
Are password managers safe? What if they get hacked?
Reputable password managers use strong encryption to protect your data. Even if their servers were breached, your passwords remain encrypted with your master password. The risk of using a password manager is far lower than the risk of reusing weak passwords across multiple sites. Our password guide covers this in detail.
Is public WiFi really dangerous?
Public WiFi carries more risk than your home network because traffic can potentially be intercepted. However, most websites now use HTTPS encryption, which provides significant protection. The main risks are on sites that don't use HTTPS and from fake WiFi networks set up by attackers. Using a VPN adds an extra layer of protection on public networks.
How do I know if my data has been in a breach?
Several free services allow you to check if your email address appears in known data breaches. Our Identity Theft Prevention guide explains how to monitor for breaches and what to do if you find your data has been exposed.

Privacy

How can I find out what information is available about me online?
Start by searching for your name in multiple search engines. Check the results across the first few pages. Our Digital Audit guide walks you through a comprehensive process for discovering your digital footprint, including accounts you may have forgotten about.
Can I delete my information from the internet?
You can remove a significant amount, but complete erasure is difficult. You can delete old accounts, request content removal from websites, and in some jurisdictions use "right to be forgotten" laws. Our Digital Footprint guide covers practical strategies for managing and reducing your online presence.
Do I really need to read privacy policies?
Reading every word of every privacy policy isn't realistic. Instead, learn to quickly identify the key sections: what data is collected, how it's shared, and how to delete your data. Our Privacy Settings guide teaches you what to look for and which red flags matter most.

Professional Presence

Can employers really see everything I post online?
Employers can see anything that's publicly available — social media posts, comments, photos, and more. Many employers actively review candidates' online presence during the hiring process. Our Optimize section helps you manage what employers find when they search for you.
Should I delete all my social media for job hunting?
Not necessarily. Having no online presence can be just as concerning to employers as having a negative one. Instead, focus on curating your presence: make personal accounts private, ensure professional profiles are polished, and create content that reflects your expertise. Our Personal Branding guide covers this strategy.
How do I separate my personal and professional online identities?
Use different email addresses for personal and professional accounts, adjust privacy settings on personal social media, and be intentional about what you share on professional platforms. Our LinkedIn guide and Personal Branding guide walk through this in detail.
